Report

A warm sunny day Orienteering on Holne Moor can hardly be beaten and Saturday fell very much into that category. Unlike much of Dartmoor once you climbed away from the reservoir area the bracken became far less of an issue and the second half of all the courses had great views... if you had the time and inclination to look at them.

Both the short and long technical courses spent quite a time in the Ringleshutes mine workings area but nearly everyone worked their way through it without too many issues. The tracks on the maprunner results page and the animation option are quite revealing and well worth checking if you want to see where you went well.... or not, and you can also see the routes of the most successful runners .

Next week is South Hessary. Lets hope for similar conditions.

Cheers Steve

Overview

A maprun event for experienced Orienteers on the open Moor. A smartphone with the maprun 7 app is needed (details below). Because of the very open and quite remote terrain these courses are not suitable for inexperienced Orienteers.

Courses not suitable for complete beginners and the courses are not set up for them- even the Orange course, which is the most straightforward, needs you to be able to identify small features on the ground and use a compass well. Bear in mind we are heading some way out into the moor, so you need to know what you are doing.

The latest version is now maprun 7 which is what we recommend.

Is maprun easier or harder than standard courses ?

Out on Dartmoor it is certainly not easier. Not having a flag hanging there also doesn’t help but if you are looking for the feature it shouldn’t really matter ! The difficulty of the courses is more a reflection of the area you are running in and Dartmoor has some of our better areas. It does stop you just getting into the rough area and looking around until you see an orange and white flag!

Is the maprun app easy to use ?

Its quite user friendly now as there have been many updates ; now version 7. One of its limitations can be in wooded areas as it reduces the strength of signal. Being on Dartmoor that will not be an issue.

If you have any questions feel free to ask away.
