Volunteer Roster Demo
Showing how an embedded Excel table can give organisers a prominent advert for volunteer vacancies in upcoming events.
I propose including the below table at the top of the webpages for ALL upcoming events:
Notes
- The philosophy here is to make volunteer assignment more visible.
- Multiple events are shown, to encourage visitor to think ahead, and to highlight repeat volunteers. We would need to manually manage which events are visible (easy to hide a column in Excel).
- A link is available that allows ANYONE with the link to edit - can give the link to organisers.
- No new software required - editing happens in the web browser.
- I am relying on the presumption that a sizeable proportion of the committee have basic experience with Microsoft Excel.
- The file itself lives on the club's OneDrive (in the Fixtures directory), but editing is not just limited to those with access.
- Note that the view is of a Table in Excel - we are all free to leave notes etcetera in areas outside the table without it being visible to the public.
- I want to emphasise: this is NOT intended for use in organising volunteers. We have existing systems for that, which we know work. This is 100% an 'advert'.
- This demo uses the website's existing ability to embed something called an "iframe". Microsoft Excel has built-in support for producing iframes like this. This is reliable stuff, I'm not inventing anything new.
- Including in an Event page is NOT currently possible - probably needs an hour or two from Paul Frost to make this work.
- If we don't like the size/shape of the box, I expect Paul Frost can sort that out, too.
- Making volunteers more visible perhaps raises the question of recognition of past efforts, but that is beyond the scope of this solution and probably needs a Volunteer Coordinator to do it justice.
