Events, Activities and Mapruns

Update 7.9.2020

A quick update on where we are in these strange times.

Although we would like to be able to organise some “proper “ events we are in a position where two main landowners, Forestry England and Dartmoor National Park are not currently giving permissions for events. With the National Trust also having limitations on numbers it really is making life difficult for orienteers at the moment.

As a result we have been having a rethink over our Map Runs as it is quite possible that these might have to be the mainstay of the club for a period of time.

Looking at the positives.. when the Maprun system works well it's great. We have had meets on both urban environments which are suited to all levels of experience and also on some of our better areas where the routes can be technically very challenging… especially with no flag to welcome you!

A few people are still having technical problems with the set up and in some cases there does not appear to be a simple answer. Despite the issues over 60 members have had a go with generally positive feedback.

On the organising front more people have been finding it is a comparatively simple process. On the moorland areas the controls are often being marked using hand held GPS’s which has helped with pinpointing their accuracy.

Many members have really got used to the idea of heading out on a Sunday morning for a run. We are going to build on this with a New Virtual O Course (VOC) going live on a fortnightly basis, starting on a Sunday. If you want to meet up with others sticking within the government guidelines that will be up to you. You will be able to download the maps from the Devon OC website with details of the current and next maps being available.

The plan is to release the following:

20/09/20 to 3/10/20        Exeter Heavitree Urban

04/10/20 to 17/10/20      Golden Dagger  Score Course...Very technical moorland…interesting!

18/10/20 to 31/10/20     Torquay Shiphay  Mainly Urban  short and Long line courses

01/11/20 to 14/11/20     South Hessary  Score Course  Moorland

15/11/20 to  28/11/20    Exeter Polsloe  Urban and Parkland

29/11/20 to 12/12/20     Woodbury  Woodland and heathland

13/12/20 to 26/12/20     Ottery St Mary  Score course

These may have to change but we will try to stick to them. The courses will be available to be run at any time and you will need to take suitable precautions to ensure your own safety, especially when heading out onto the moors. (See below)

Last Saturday I saw half a dozen runners out on the Holne courses in glorious sunshine so perhaps some of our older courses could still be worth a visit.  Just a thought.

Enjoy your Mapruns. Steve

General safety guidance for individual Mapruns:

  • Individual Mapruns are run at your own risk
  • Each runner should make their own assessment of risks in the Maprun area, including terrain and weather, and how those risks are best managed
  • Be aware of risks associated with traffic, cyclists and pedestrians, and act sensibly
  • Under 16’s should be accompanied or appropriately supervised, particularly where there are risks associated with traffic.
  • Current social distancing guidance and other measures to limit risks associated with coronavirus should be followed.
  • In more remote areas, consider the need to let someone know where you are going and alerting them when you are back.
